Need EPC for your agency, clinic, or school?

EPC is scheduled on request. Tell us your head count and the dates that work, and we will set up a class at our Reno classroom or at your facility.

EPC classes meet at 255 W Moana Ln, Suite 200 in Reno, convenient for EMS and pediatric providers from Sparks, Carson City, Fernley, and Lake Tahoe.

About the EPC course

Sick kids are rare calls and high-stakes calls. EPC gives you a repeatable way to assess them fast and act with confidence.

Emergency Pediatric Care focuses on the critical pediatric physiology, illnesses, injuries, and interventions that matter in the field and the emergency department. The course is built around the Pediatric Assessment Triangle, which lets you form an accurate first impression of a child in seconds, and it stresses the critical-thinking skills you need to make good decisions about sick and injured children.

NAEMT develops its medical education with partner organizations that include the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of EMS Physicians. The current edition pairs lectures with hands-on skill stations and patient simulations, from airway management and vascular access to newborn resuscitation and recognizing abuse, so you leave with skills, not just slides.

NAEMT publishes a side-by-side comparison of EPC and PALS for providers deciding which course fits.

Who should take EPC?

EPC is for providers at every level who may be the first to care for a sick or injured child.

  • EMTs, advanced EMTs, and paramedics
  • Emergency medical responders and firefighters
  • Emergency and pediatric nurses
  • Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians
  • School nurses and clinic staff
  • Flight and critical care transport crews

Hospital-based and need the AHA pediatric course instead? PALS covers pediatric resuscitation under AHA guidelines, and PEARS is the assessment course for providers who rarely see critically ill kids.

EPC questions

What is the difference between EPC and PALS?

PALS is the American Heart Association's pediatric resuscitation course, centered on arrest and arrhythmia algorithms. EPC is NAEMT's broader pediatric course for prehospital and emergency providers, covering assessment, the full range of pediatric illness and injury, and the decision making that comes before and after resuscitation. Many providers hold both, and some employers accept either.

How long is the EPC course?

The provider course is 16 hours, usually over two days. The hybrid version is 8 hours online plus 8 hours in the classroom. The refresher is 8 hours.

What certification do I get, and how long is it good for?

When you pass, NAEMT issues a certificate of completion and an EPC provider card that is valid for 4 years.

Does EPC count for continuing education?

Yes. EPC is accredited by CAPCE (the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education) for 16 hours of continuing education credit and is recognized by the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) for recertification. EPC also meets the National Registry's NCCP requirements.

What are the prerequisites for EPC?

A current EMT, AEMT, paramedic, RN, NP, PA, or physician license or certification. Emergency medical responders are welcome too.

Is there pre-course work for EPC?

Yes. Plan to complete the pre-course reading from the EPC materials before the first day, and in some courses a pre-test as well. We send the details and any online access codes after you register, so give yourself at least a week.

Do I need the EPC book?

Yes. You must have access to the current NAEMT EPC course textbook before, during, and after class. You can add it when you register. If you decline the book at registration, you are confirming that you already have access to the current edition by other means, for example a copy from your employer.

How do I register?

Registration is online only. When an EPC date is posted, pick it at the top of this page and tap Register to finish on our secure checkout. For a course scheduled on request, text (775) 235-2117 or email Info@HinsonCPR.com and we will set a date and send you the registration link. We cannot take registrations or payments over the phone.

What if I need to change my date?

Contact us before your class. EPC reschedules are $50, and all purchases are nonrefundable. Full details are in our terms and conditions.

Can you teach EPC for my agency or crew?

Yes. Most EPC classes run as private courses for fire departments, ambulance services, hospitals, and other groups. We can teach at our Reno classroom or at your station or facility. Text (775) 235-2117 or email Info@HinsonCPR.com with your head count and the dates that work for you.

Is Hinson CPR the same as Sierra BLS?

Yes. Hinson CPR is the new name for Sierra BLS. Same owner, same classroom on Moana Lane, and the same authorized NAEMT Training Center.

EPC and the Emergency Pediatric Care logo are trademarks of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), used here to promote registered NAEMT courses taught by Hinson CPR, formerly Sierra BLS, an authorized NAEMT Training Center.
